Ecodesign ready Scheme
Posted on 15 March 2018
The Ecodesign Ready Scheme is a new landmark in the increasing environmental benefits of wood burning stoves. Air quality is important to all of us. Even though wood burning stoves are a relatively low source of emissions, the SIA feel it is important to reduce emissions from wood burning stoves even further.
Ecodesign is a ground breaking EU regulation, which will become legal in the UK (and Ireland) in 2022. It sets much tougher minimum emission requirements for energy-related products which have an environmental impact, such as wood burning and multi fuel stoves.
Environmental scientists have identified pollutants that can have a negative impact on our health. One of the most high profile and widespread sources is diesel engines. Even though wood burning stoves are a relatively low source of emissions the SIA is committed to reducing the emissions from wood burning stoves even further.
Independent research conducted by Kiwa Gastec on behalf of the SIA has shown that modern clean burning stoves, designed to meet the new Ecodesign requirements will reduce particulate emissions by 90% compared to an open fire and 80-84% compared to an old stove.
Ecodesign is the European-wide programme to lower emissions. It is due to come into force in the UK in 2022. The main manufacturers in the SIA have decided to release stoves that will meet the lower emission limits now, and from 2020 to only manufacture wood burning stoves that meet the new Ecodesign criteria, two years ahead of schedule.
The Ecodesign Ready scheme is supported by DEFRA. The SIA Ecodesign ready label will set the standard for the most environmentally friendly stoves available today. The official launch of the scheme will be on 28th February in the Houses of Parliament.
